While Sun City Carolina Lakes is a fairly new subdivision, the history of the Indian Land/Fort Mill area dates back before the Revolutionary War, when colonists first began settling the community that would eventually come to be known as Fort Mill. For many decades, the textile industry dominated this otherwise rural community, processing the cotton harvest from local farms. Eventually, the economy diversified into other industries, and as nearby Charlotte continued its expansion over the years, this area eventually became part of the popular south Charlotte suburbs. Even so, the area continues to maintain its country charm, with Fort Mill preserving its historic downtown (listed on the National Register of Historic Places).
