For a city that has spent the past several decades growing into one of the Southeast’s most dynamic metros, Charlotte still has a way of flying under the radar.
According to a new 2026 survey from Clever Real Estate, Charlotte has been named America’s most underrated city. About 21% of those surveyed named the Queen City among the country’s most underrated places to live, putting Charlotte ahead of cities including Austin, Seattle, Birmingham, and Raleigh.
The recognition may be new, but the qualities that draw people to Charlotte have been here for years. Ask someone who has lived here for a while, and they’ll likely point to the same thing: the combination of places, people, and experiences that make the city easy to enjoy and even easier to settle into. There are thriving business districts and established neighborhoods, major sports and local events, restaurants and breweries, and plenty of ways to get outside. There's always something to do while still feeling approachable enough to make it your own.
More Than One Way to Live
Charlotte has grown considerably while still holding onto a sense of balance. Its neighborhoods, green spaces, and local traditions remain an important part of everyday life.
That sense of balance is especially evident in Charlotte’s neighborhoods. Myers Park and Dilworth offer tree-lined streets and historic homes, while South End brings a more energetic, walkable feel. Cotswold and Eastover have long been favorites for their established communities, while South Charlotte offers larger lots and more room to spread out. Each area has its own personality, giving people plenty of ways to find a neighborhood that feels like a good fit.
There’s more to explore beyond your neighborhood, too. Cheer on the Carolina Panthers or Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium, catch a Charlotte Knights game at Truist Field, walk or bike along the Rail Trail, explore the Greenway system, or spend an afternoon at the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Restaurants, breweries, live music, festivals, museums, and neighborhood events add even more to the mix throughout the year.
Why People Stay
Over time, you start to understand why people put down roots here. It’s the neighborhood you’ve loved for years, the restaurant you keep coming back to, or the friends you’ve made along the way. Those small, everyday moments become part of what makes a place feel like home.
We’ve seen that firsthand at Dickens Mitchener. For 35 years, we’ve helped people move across Charlotte, into Charlotte, and within the neighborhoods they already love. We’ve seen the city evolve, watched neighborhoods grow, and helped generations of clients find homes that fit the way they want to live.
Along the way, we’ve learned that choosing a home is about more than the property itself. It’s about the community around it, the character of the neighborhood, and how a place fits into the life you want to build.
Charlotte continues to grow, and there is always something new around the corner. We’re proud to know the city through all of those changes, to be part of the communities that make it special, and to call Charlotte home.
